Basic raw materials

> composted maritime pine bark
The main raw material used by Aquiland is maritime pine bark that provides both aeration and drainage, essential for healthy root systems. Its uniformity, stability and low phytotoxicity mean that it can be used safely in the production of a wide range of growing media.
Composting enhances these innate properties and the heat generated during composting makes it even safer to use. Sizing selects the grain-size range best suited to the intended application. The coarser lumps of organic matter provide stability for the physical structure of the medium and resist compaction. The finer particles are rich in micro-organisms and organic acids and regulate the plant's intake of water and minerals

> wood fibre
Aquiland's patented use of wood fibre is an innovation that has prompted a great deal of follow-up research work. Wood fibre innately attracts and retains water and remains stable at high temperatures. Its wetting properties and its ability to provide the plant with water make it an ideal ingredient for growing media. Aquiland has secured a regular supply by acquiring financial interest and through industrial involvement.

> blond sphagnum peat moss
Aquiland primarily uses blond sphagnum peat moss, shipped from the main centres of extraction.
Although there are sustainability issues associated with this non-renewable material, sphagnum peat plays an important role in regulating the hydromineral nutritional properties of substrates. Its characteristics can be tailored to suit the intended application by choosing different grades and preparation methods.
Due to its increasing scarcity and to help to preserve peat wetlands, that play an essential role in maintaining a balanced climate, Aquiland has prioritised - for the last twenty years - peat-free or reduced-peat growing media

> horse manure
Aquiland collects and composts horse manure from a number of local stud farms. This compost is used either in pure form as a soil improver for market gardening and vineyards, or Is combined with other ingredients to produce growing media for amateur gardeners. It provides a large portion of the nutrition needed by plants.

Supplements and additives
The basic ingredients are supplemented by various materials to refine the specific characteristics of each substrate:

Forest heather soil

Clay

Pozzolan

Sand

Perlite

Vermiculite
Fertilisers, soil improvers, water retainers or micro-organisms complete these formulations to satisfy the particular nutritional requirements of the plant or crop being grown.
